British and French leaders intensified the war of words over dangerous crossings in the English Channel after at least 27 people died on a sea voyage on Wednesday (24), bringing to the surface tensions simmering in the migration crisis.
The crossing of the English Channel towards the United Kingdom is made in dinghies or small boats. Thousands of migrants take to boats every month, a reason for growing tension between London and Paris.
The two countries exchange accusations and try to abstain from the crisis. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said France “has to do more to stop boats from leaving its shores”.
French President Emmanuel Macron argues that France is just a transit country for immigrants seeking asylum.
Countries have another tension point
France and the United Kingdom discuss the number of licenses issued to French fishing boats.
In principle, countries agreed that fishermen who were already sailing in British waters before Brexit would be allowed to continue as long as they could prove that track record.
The fishermen, however, allege that the British government delays and makes it difficult to issue licenses, preventing the work of hundreds of boats.
