Earlier today, Darmanen had announced that he would visit Rome in the afternoon at the request of French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss European cooperation regarding migrants arriving in Lampedusa.
“What we want to say to our Italian friends, who I believe they completely agree, is that we must protect the EU’s external borders and, above all, process asylum requests immediately,” Darmanen said.
“When they are not entitled to asylum, people should be sent back to their country,” he added.
The French minister is to meet with his Italian counterpart Matteo Piandendozzi.
