France: Signs of a 20-year record abstention in parliamentary elections

Important indications that this year’s parliamentary elections in France (first round) will have an abstention – a record of 20 years can be seen by looking at the aggregate data from the French Ministry of the Interior, published by the website of the French newspaper Le Figaro (www.lefigaro.fr).

According to them today at 12 noon, the turnout was at 18.43%. This percentage, as shown in the following chart, is the lowest since 2002, ie for 20 years.

As is clear from the same chart, since 2002 the participation has been continuously falling as from 64.42% (in 2002) it fell to 48.7% in 2017, following a continuously declining trend throughout the interim period.

It is noted that the first results from the first round of the French parliamentary elections will be announced at 8 pm French time (9 pm Greek time),
