France: The large forest fire in the Ardes has been contained

The blaze, likely caused by a criminal act, which has destroyed about 12,000 hectares in the Ardes, in southeastern France, without causing any casualties, has today been contained, according to firefighters.

“The fire is considered contained, we have stabilized most of its perimeter, but there is still one area where the fire is problematic, it is burning against the wind,” said an officer of the Ardes fire service this morning.

The fire started yesterday in the area of Lysas community, near Obena, from five separate places. Fire then broke out in three other places within a radius of 10 kilometers.

Criminal activity is considered highly probable, according to the local prosecutor’s office, and “at least one person” is being held.

More than 350 residents were evacuated from the Vogue resort and surrounding campsites, but the fire did not cause injuries or threaten homes.

Earlier yesterday, a fire broke out in an area of low vegetation near Montpellier, burning 8,000 hectares.

The new fires come just days after two giant wildfires that burned for 12 days destroyed 210,000 hectares of forest in the Gironde in southwestern France and forced 36,000 people to flee the area.

According to UN experts, with climate change, the intensity of drought episodes risks increasing even more. In France the level of drought has reached record heights and 91 of the 96 regions have been forced to impose restrictions on water use.
