France: Warning of serious problems in the mass media due to the large strike on Tuesday

The problems that public transport will face in France on Tuesday due to the large strike over the changes planned by the government in the pension highlighted the Minister of Transport, Clement Bonn.

“It’s going to be a difficult, very difficult day for public transport… We expect serious problems”the minister told LCI TV.

He added that the government remains open to talks with unions, but stressed that the government would maintain the central goal of the change proposed by President Emmanuel Macron, which is to raise the retirement age by two years to 64.

“The heart of the reform will not change”commented.

The government wants to gradually raise the retirement age by three months every year from September until 2030.

President Macron has stated that he was elected with a pension reform plan and that without these changes the country’s pension system cannot remain financially viable.

Unions organized a first major mobilization on January 19 when more than a million citizens demonstrated against the plans in various cities across the country.

Last week unions had planned a 48-hour strike at nuclear plants and refineries for Thursday and Friday, but that plan was abandoned a day later with the hardline CGT union announcing workers preferred to join Tuesday’s national strike.
