France’s far-right National Rally (RN) made mistakes that led to its defeat in the second round of parliamentary elections on Sunday (7), Jordan Bardella, one of the party’s leaders, said on Monday (8).
“Of course we always make mistakes, I made some, we all made some, and I take my share of responsibility for these results,” Bardella said, speaking to reporters outside the party’s headquarters in Paris.
Still, he stressed that the time for RN to come to power was only postponed.
Uncertainty after elections
France is facing a “hung parliament” after the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) coalition topped the election results, ahead of the front-runner RN and President Emmanuel Macron’s majority.
Bardella blamed a joint call by the NFP and Macron for candidates to withdraw from three-candidate runoff races in an effort to prevent the RN from securing a majority in the National Assembly.
Still, Bardella highlighted that the RN’s victory will come in the next French elections, with the 2027 presidential race ahead.
“The wave that carries us is strong… and this wave will take us to power,” he concluded.
