French president says war in Ukraine ‘will not stop in coming days’

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that there is little hope that the war in Ukraine will end soon. “Unfortunately, this war will not stop in the next few days,” Macron told French station RTL on Friday.

He pointed to May 9 as an “important day” for the Russian military, calling it almost “certain that for President Putin May 9 must be a day of victory.” “I think they will focus their efforts on Donbass. I think we will experience very difficult scenes in the coming days and weeks in Donbass,” Macron said.

some context: Ukrainian officials say heavy fighting is ongoing in the east of the country, with bombings reported across the Donbass region, ahead of what they are warning of could be a major Russian offensive.

Macron warned that the coming weeks are not likely to “lead to many diplomatic concessions from Russia”.

Humanitarian assistance is complicated: Macron also highlighted how humanitarian efforts by France, Greece, Turkey and the UN are facing many difficulties because “there is a total refusal on the Russian side.”
