“Friends: The Reunion”: those passages that China has decided to delete

The Chinese were unable to view the entire revival. FriendsĀ : The Reunion, broadcast Thursday, May 27, 2021 on Salto and HBO Max, aroused the emotion of a multitude of fans around the world. However, in China, some were disillusioned, as the BBC points out. Indeed, the passages of Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and BTS have been withdrawn – six minutes of episode – on the three Chinese streaming platforms. Something to intrigue, even arouse the anger of many Internet users. “It will just make me want to know more about these cut scenes”, could one read in particular on the social network Weibo. Some did not hesitate to unveil the censored footage on social media themselves, while others shared the links to hacking sites, allowing access to the full episode.

In FriendsĀ : The Reunion, Lady Gaga performs the iconic title Smelly Cat, with the character of Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow). The singer has been banned by China since 2016. The reason? His meeting with the Dalai Lama during a conference of mayors organized in Indiana, United States. Indeed, in the country, the spiritual leader of Tibet is regarded as an opponent.

BTS and Justin Bieber, banned by China

For its part, the K-Pop group BTS, had evoked the “pain” and the “sacrifices” of American and South Korean soldiers during the Korean War, last October. A statement that earned the boy band the censorship of its advertising campaigns. As for Justin Bieber – disguised as a potato in the series – he is no longer allowed to perform in China, targeted for his “bad behavior”. In 2014, his visit to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo sparked controversy. All references to the LGBTQIA + community were also overlooked.
