This new – and already celebrated – film version of Cyrano it is signed by the British Joe Wright (The darkest hour, Pride and Prejudice, Anna Karenina) and it’s a musical. As well as being a family business. The film is, in fact, the transposition on the screen of the play by Erica Schmidt, here as a screenwriter, who thought of reinventing Rostand’s drama, giving up Cyrano’s “big nose” to make room for physicality (and talent) of her husband, Peter Dinklagethe unforgettable Tyrion Lannister of the Game of Thrones. Dinklage then turns into the famous swordsman Cyrano, while the role of the desired Roxanne plays him Haley BennettJoe Wright’s partner in real life. Kelvin Harrison jr it is, however, the young and handsome Christian. The songs in the film are signed by the American rock band The National.
The plot does not stray far from the original work, except for an extra bit of romance. And feminism. Roxanne is not only the object of Cyrano’s boundless love, but she is an independent woman who knows what she wants, or at least she thinks she knows when she falls in love with young cadet Christian, rejecting the attentions of the rich and unattractive. Duc de Guiche. “I’m no one’s pet, no one’s wife, no one’s woman,” she lets her know at first. From there the great courtship begins: on the one hand Christian, the soldier insecure and unable to use words, on the other the cultured Cyrano, willing to remain in the shadows so as not to see her beloved suffer.
We are in seventeenth-century Paris, but there is a lot of Italy in this new one Cyrano. The film was shot almost entirely in Sicily. In Noto, on Mount Etna and in some of the most beautiful buildings in Catania and Syracuse. And the costume designer is Massimo Cantini Parrini, who with this work wins the second Oscar nomination (after the one for Pinocchio by Matteo Garrone). Let’s cheer for him.
