G. Karagiannis: Large railway projects attract the interest of large companies

The members of the Standing Committee on Production and Trade of the Parliament, informed the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, in charge of Infrastructure Mr. George Karagiannis, about the contract for the railway project “Installation of a modern signaling system and ETCS-LEVEL1 in Thessaloniki-E and replacement of 37 track changes for signaling needs “.

The Undersecretary of Infrastructure described as extremely important the project that starts from the Thessaloniki Railway Station to the corresponding one in Eidomeni, while especially for the Polykastro-Eidomeni section, the project extends along the new variant of the line.

“With the installation of modern railway systems, the safety, comfort and transport capacity of the railway network to the neighboring country and the rest of the Balkans are maximized,” he explained.

In fact, he stressed that with the completion of the project, the complete modernization of the monastery, now electric, railway line opens the way for international routes which, as the Undersecretary commented, “has been almost non-existent for years.”

The largest railway project in the country

Mr. Karagiannis also responded one by one to the objections – mainly of members of the official opposition – but pointed out that the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with Minister Costas Karamanlis at the Ministry of Infrastructure, are currently implementing the largest railway project program. has never been implemented by the country.

“This is a personal success of Costas Karamanlis, who changed the whole way we perceive public works. Both with institutional interventions and with substantive ones, but mainly by seeing every problem and solving it in a positive way,” the deputy minister stressed.

Mr. Karagiannis underlined that the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is implementing the largest program of railway projects worth 4.5 billion euros in order to connect the country’s major ports with the railway network, thus upgrading their strategic role.

According to the Undersecretary, this large program confirms the “decision to develop and improve the railway network, an environmentally friendly and green means of transport” and added: “The major projects of the competitive dialogue, amounting to 4.5 billion euros, have begun and are the subject of interest from many large companies in Greece and abroad “.

The credibility of the State is strengthened as timeless problems are solved

In particular, for Thessaloniki, but also for Northern Greece, Mr. Karagiannis noted that, “it acquires another comparative advantage as a modern transit hub in the Balkans, with obvious economic and developmental advantages.”

As he mentioned, an additional advantage is the fact that “in a special situation, the credibility of the State is strengthened, as timeless problems are solved and the basic infrastructure that the region has needed for decades is strengthened”.

The Undersecretary once again called for the infrastructure projects to be left out of political controversy, as the essence and what the citizens are interested in is for these projects to be delivered, to create added value, growth and new jobs.

After all, as he commented, “the numbers speak for themselves and tell the truth. How many works did SYRIZA auction?”.

Not so many projects have been done in these times

The basic principle of the government and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, as he noted, are the projects that are announced to have secured funding and a specific schedule.

In addition, he stressed that as a government “we took a political initiative and changed the way we will auction public works” explaining that “through competitive dialogue the processes become faster”.

A clear example of this change is, according to Mr. Karagiannis, “what we have achieved with the PPP tenders for FlyOver and” Kalamata-Rizomylos-Pylos-Methoni “. PPP will also have a temporary contractor in the coming days “and added” so many projects have not been done in these times “.

Dozens of construction sites in Thessaloniki, this is not a virtual reality

In fact, especially for Thessaloniki, Mr. Karagiannis referred to the titanic effort made in the area where the works are large and many.

“This is not a virtual reality, we can walk to Thessaloniki whenever you want and see the construction sites that have been set up,” he stressed and mentioned the works being done in the area, such as “Thermi-Galatista”, the “orphan” kilometer of Potidaea, the road connection of the 6th pier of the port, the road connection of the Filyros Pediatric Hospital, the flood protection works, the reconstruction of the Courthouse, the 17 school units, but also the railway connection of the port, which is auctioned, as it is in the package of 4.5 billion euro.

“We have announced all these projects, we will deliver them,” the Undersecretary stressed.

Recruitment in OSE, renegotiation of a contract with TRAINOSE

On issues related to TRAINOSE, Mr. Karagiannis noted that the sales contract signed by the previous government was “colonial in nature” and the current leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is renegotiating it in order to improve conditions for the Greek State.

He added, as far as OSE is concerned, that recruitments and transfers are planned by TRAINOSE for its reinforcement, clarifying that the recruitments will be done through ASEP, “as our government always does”.

Referring to the suffering of passengers during the recent bad weather and the compensation of 1,000 euros, Mr. Karagiannis stressed that this alone shows the different perception with which this government deals with things.

“We are a liberal government, we want to work with individuals. The private sector has obligations and, when it does not meet its contractual obligations, the state intervenes and ensures compensation. And this is what our government did for the first time,” he said.

For the project at the railway section “Thessaloniki-Eidomeni”

Regarding the contract for the project in the Thessaloniki-Eidomeni section, Mr. Karagiannis, stressed that the total deadline for completion of all works and delivery to ERGOSE has been set at 36 months, while for an additional 36 months the total duration of the mandatory maintenance and warranty period of the projects.

The elements that make the project important are, among others:

– The installation of a new signaling system – electronic type remote control, which will replace the existing system

– The signal security of the lateral protection of the open line of the section Polykastr – Paionia – Eidomeni

– The replacement or installation of 41 track changes with new, in located stations of the department, for the proper operation of the signaling system

– The construction of infrastructure works for a new bypass line, approximately 2,275 km long, in the area of Mikro Dasos

– The installation of fiber optic network and telecommunications network, for the transmission of signaling and electrification data,

– The installation of electric drive in the area of the Small Forest.
