G. Plakiotakis: New financing program for the development of island port infrastructures and for selected barren lines

The approval of the “Transport 2021 – 2027” program by the EU is, according to the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Yiannis Plakiotakis, a very great success of the Greek government.

This is a financing program of 175 million euros that will be allocated to the development of island port infrastructure and an additional 80 million euros to finance selected barren lines. The securing of the program was the result of the coordinated action of the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Development and Investments and the Special Management Service and the systematic negotiation with the European Commission.

In his statements, the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Yannis Plakiotakis emphasized that this is a very important success “that dramatically changes the situation for the islanders and our islands. Now, not only the stable and more frequent ferry connection of the islands is ensured, but also mainland Greece, as well as between them, but also the quality upgrade of the service provided, with better port infrastructure and incentives for launching new “green” ships”.

The benefits, according to Mr. Plakiotakis, “are many and important, not only for the inhabitants of the islands and the visitors, but also for the local social and economic activity. This is a very big step, following the increase by 136 million euros of funding for the barren lines, in the previous three years, as well as the creation of 24 new lines, serving tens of thousands of islanders and travelers. These new possibilities, combined with targeted actions for “Navigation Safety Systems”, through funding of more than 90,000,000 euros and a series of important projects of the Ministry of Shipping and Insular Policy in ports throughout the country, decisively serve our goal for the development course of the island area and the maritime economy”, concluded the Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy.
