G20: Extraordinary Summit with Afghanistan as a backdrop

Extraordinary Summit of G20 under the Italian Presidency and with the main issue the situation in Afghanistan is expected to take place today, Tuesday (12/10), via the internet.

More specifically, the meeting will be attended by members of the G20, represented at the level of heads of state and government, while China will be represented by its Foreign Minister, Wang Yi. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also speak.

The aim of today’s initiative is to identify joint actions, given that, as reported by the Italian press, the Taliban did not keep their promises.

G20: The main topics of the meeting

The main topics to be discussed by G20 leaders are the provision of humanitarian aid, the fight against terrorism and ensuring freedom of entry and exit from Afghanistan, for both Afghans and foreign nationals.

At the same time, it is considered an important goal to put pressure on women to respect their rights and to be able to take part in the whole spectrum of public life, with full access to the education system.

The European Union will be represented at today’s meeting by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

The Italian government, according to information cited by the RES-EIA, wants to obtain the closest possible support for UN initiatives by the G20 countries, to provide broad humanitarian aid – which will mainly support the most vulnerable categories. of society- and to put pressure on the Taliban to cut ties with terrorist organizations.
