The G7 countries have committed to achieving the goal of having electricity sectors “predominantly decarbonised” by 2035, according to a joint communiqué signed by energy ministers from the group, after a meeting on Friday (27).
The governments also intend to end new international investment in fossil fuel projects later this year, according to the note.
Another objective is to accelerate the process of transitioning sales of diesel and gasoline cars to a model centered on vehicles from alternative sources.
The ministers also promised to phase out coal power generation, but did not set a date for reaching the target.
Previously, the group discussed setting 2030 as a deadline, but there was no agreement and the year was omitted from the statement.
“We will quickly expand the technologies and policies necessary for the clean energy transition”, they assured.
The seven rich economies reaffirmed the role of nuclear energy in the transition process and stressed that they will work to accelerate the end of fossil fuel subsidies.
