Gasoline may drop 2.5% at pumps after reduction for distributors, says economist

For the coordinator of the Consumer Price Index (IPC) of the Brazilian Institute of Economics of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV Ibre), André Braz, gasoline at gas station pumps could be 2.5% cheaper, with an impact of 0.15 percentage point in inflation.

Petrobras announced on Tuesday that, as of this Wednesday (7), it will sell both gasoline and diesel cheaper to distributors. In the case of the first, the reduction is R$ 0.20 (-6.1%) per liter, from R$ 3.28 to R$ 3.08. Oil drops from R$ 4.89 to R$ 4.49, that is, R$ 0.40 (-8.2%).

In a note, Petrobras informed that, considering the mandatory blend of 73% gasoline and 27% anhydrous ethanol for sale at service stations, the company’s share in the consumer price will be approximately R$ 2.25.

The national average for gasoline to the Brazilian consumer is R$ 5.03, according to the latest bulletin released by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP). After accumulating six weeks of increase, gasoline has maintained a certain stability in the last two weeks, with a slight reduction of R$ 0.02 in the period.

For Braz, the effect should be diluted in the next two months of the Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), with a retreat of 0.11 p,p. in December and 0.04 pp in January 2023.

With regard to diesel, Petrobras reported that the company’s share at the stations, again considering the mandatory mixture of 90% oil and 10% biodiesel, should be R$ 4.04.

Economist André Braz explains that, unlike gasoline, diesel weighs little in the IPCA, but has effects on several sectors due to its use in freight, public transport and even for the generation of electricity.

“According to the IPCA, until October of this year, diesel accumulates a high, in 12 months, of 46.5%. Any downward movement reduces the cost of productive activity, benefiting countless sectors”, he highlighted.

According to data from the ANP, the fuel also showed a slight drop in the last week. Common diesel (S500) fell from R$6.57 to R$6.55 (-0.3%), while the S10 (less polluting) dropped from R$6.68 to R$6.67 (-0 .15%).
