Petrobras monitors international parity at this moment, assesses Abicom

When Petrobras announced the reduction in the price of gasoline and diesel to distributors on Tuesday (6), the Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers (Abicom) showed that gasoline was sold in the country R$ 0.24 more expensive than the international market, diesel, R$ 0.34 higher.

Given this scenario, the president of Abicom, Sérgio Araujo, assesses that the change came to fill the disparity. He explains that oil has been falling in the face of the possibility of reduced demand from China, which is still dealing with the consequences of Covid-19.

“This reduction is perfectly in line with Petrobras’ price policy, which monitors the international market, and with the calculation that Abicom makes on a daily basis. Unfortunately, if we look at the history of 2022, especially the last few weeks, we see that Petrobras has not been keeping up with parity. Suffice it to say that it went 95 days without readjusting the gasoline and 77 days without readjusting the diesel, ”he said.

Abicom’s accounts show that, between the end of September and the month of October, the election period, fuels were out of date, without Petrobras raising prices. On October 31, after the second round, for example, gasoline was R$ 0.63 cheaper in Brazil than in the international market, while diesel was R$ 1.62.

THE CNN sought Petrobras for a position on Abicom’s speech and awaits response.

This week, after an agenda at Petrobras headquarters, the coordinator of the working group on Mines and Energy during the transition of the Lula government, Maurício Tolmasquim, stated that there will be a debate on the company’s pricing policy.

“The new Ministry of Mines and Energy will have a government policy, which will be new. It doesn’t necessarily mean that Petrobras will change the policy, but there will be a policy determined by the Ministry of Mines and Energy for the country,” he said.

The president of Abicom defends the maintenance of the international parity, but welcomes the new government’s concern with the social question and the possibility of a trigger to avoid external shocks.

“We understand that the new government will be open to dialogue. All members of the transition and President Lula himself are aware of the importance of an open market and of listening to all agents. We believe that, considering the governance already established in a mixed capital company, this price policy aligned with the international market will be necessary. But it is a government that has a very strong social concern. One of the ways could be the creation of a price stabilization fund, with the government controlling this fund with extra resources, such as royalties, special participation and the dividends themselves”, said Araújo to CNN 🇧🇷
