Waylon Smithers Jr., the loyal assistant to feisty billionaire Montgomery Burns, will finally find love in a historic episode of “The Simpsons.”
The character from the animated series from Fox, that revealed to be homosexual during an episode in 2016, will be the center of a romance story that airs on November 21st.
The episode was crafted by longtime writer Rob LaZebnik and his son Johnny LaZebnik, who inspired his father to write the Smithers story, in which he reveals himself to be a homosexual.
“Often gay romances are a subplot or are shown in some kind of montage as a joke,” Johnny LaZebnik told the New York Post this week.
“I’m excited because we’re going to show the beginning, the middle and who knows how a gay relationship ends, really introduce them to [os personagens] they know each other”.
The character Smithers Jr’s new boyfriend is stylist tycoon Michael De Graaf, voiced by Victor Garber.
Garber, a renowned actor on the series “Family Law” and openly homosexual, spoke about the plot to the New York Post.
He said it was “crucial that these stories get recognized,” adding that every time he plays a gay character “it brings back certain feelings” he had. “When I was a younger actor, I couldn’t reveal my sexual orientation,” he says.
The Smither character’s sexual orientation has been a secret on the show for years. Prior to his official confirmation in season 27, his obsession with Mr. Burns was portrayed in elaborate fantasy sequences.
