The Metropolitan Civil Guard arrested 167 people fleeing justice, including murderers, rapists, thieves, pension debtors and a member of the “Comando Vermelho” through the Smart Sampa camera system.
According to data from São Paulo city hall, 1,380 people were arrested while committing crimes. The system also helped find 28 missing people and capture 40 fugitives in the month of November alone in the period of one week.
Using facial recognition, alerts are triggered at the Smart Sampa command center, in the central region of the city, where GCM agents call vehicles to make arrests.
The system was responsible for the arrest of a member of the criminal faction “Comando Vermelho”. The man was serving his sentence at the Nestor Canoa Penitentiary, in Mirandópolis, south of São Paulo and had been on the run for around three months when he did not return from his temporary release in September this year. He was arrested while walking down a street in the Planalto Paulista neighborhood. Taken to the 16th Police District, he remains at the disposal of the Court.
Furthermore, in recent weeks, two rapists were identified by Smart Sampa cameras. One of them, a 46-year-old man was at the Vila Prudente Terminal, was captured by agents and taken to the 42nd Police District, in the Parque São Lucas neighborhood, where he remained at the disposal of the Justice.
Another case was a 51-year-old man, arrested at the Parque Dom Pedro II Bus Terminal. He was arrested by agents from the Metropolitan Civil Guard, after the Smart Sampa platform generated a face capture alert.
Also according to the data, the number of Smart Sampa’s own cameras by region in the city of São Paulo are: 2,125 in the north zone, 2,888 in the south zone, 4,942 in the center, 6,884 in the east zone and 1,264 in the west zone.
