The German authorities are unable to access the 1,700 BTC cryptocurrency wallet owned by the convicted hacker because the owner did not disclose the private key.
According to a Reuters publication, German law enforcement agencies have confiscated a cryptocurrency wallet that contains 1,700 BTC worth over $ 67 million at the fraudster’s current exchange rate. The hacker was sentenced to prison and has already served his sentence. However, he still refuses to provide information to access the wallet.
Police have repeatedly tried to crack the password to access 1,700 BTC, according to the Kempten prosecutor.
“We asked about the password, but he doesn’t say it,” said prosecutor Sebastian Murer. “Maybe he doesn’t know him.”
The fraudster was sentenced to more than two years in prison for installing hidden cryptocurrency miners on victims’ computers. According to the publication, “prosecutors have made sure that a hacker will not be able to access their BTC.”
In December, a story appeared on Reddit of a user who restored the keys to a Bitcoin wallet that had stored 127 BTC since 2011. And in January it became known that the programmer Stefan Thomas had forgotten the password from the secure drive that stores the private keys of the wallet with 7,002 BTC. He had only two attempts to guess the password.
