German researchers collaborate with Oreltech to prototype a new flexible OLED screen

Researchers from the Berlin Center for Materials and Energy. Helmholtz and the Physics Department of the Humboldt University of Berlin, together with Oreltech specialists, have developed a new prototype of a flexible OLED panel. This prototype uses Oreltech silver ink to form electrodes on a PET substrate.

The researchers report that the new panel outperforms current panels that use indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes in both efficiency and brightness. In addition, the new material demonstrates better flexion and extension resistance of the panel.

The electrodes are formed on a substrate using Oreltech silver ink, which is free of metal particles. Ink is applied using a low temperature inkjet process. The reduction of the silver ions contained in the ink to metallic silver is carried out after application under the influence of low-temperature argon plasma. A stack of OLED materials is then formed on top of the electrodes.
