In the presence of Chancellor Olaf Soltz and Vice-Chancellor Robert Hubeck, Elon Musk inaugurated today in Brandenburg the first “mega-factory” of the Tesla car industry in Europe. “It’s a sign of a lot going on in Germany right now,” Solz said.
The plant, located in Grunheide, near the Berlin-Brandenburg airport, cost $ 5 billion and took two years to prepare, and received its final license just two weeks ago. The most important problems faced by the company concerned environmental concerns and especially the water management of the area. It is characteristic that the construction of the factory, which will employ 12,000 workers, was done with about 20 temporary licenses and without a guarantee for the final operating license. Initially, the plan envisaged completion of the project before the summer of 2021.
The German factory will build the Tesla Y model, which until now was imported to Europe either from the USA or China and, according to the company, within the first half of the year, the new factory will build 30,000 electric cars, with aim to soon reach 500,000 cars a year, significantly increasing competition in electric cars.
Elon Musk, who arrived in Berlin from Texas for the occasion, already handed over the first 30 cars to their new owners today, as the company had received a special test license to build 2,000 vehicles before the official opening. .
This factory “is a sign for many issues that are moving in Germany now”, Chancellor Olaf Solz stressed in his speech and referred to the fact that the first factory producing exclusively electric vehicles is located in the former East Germany, but also to justify Germany’s choice to remain an industrial country and not be limited to the provision of services, as many have recommended in previous years. Mr Soltz also said the new technologies were creating jobs, with a view to both Tesla’s investment and the microchip plant announced by Intel in Germany, stressing that global competition was fair and productive.
