The departure of the Left (Die Linke) was announced a few hours ago by the co-founder and former president of Oscar Lafontaine, stating that the party “has today given up the demand to present a left-wing alternative to the policy of social insecurity and inequality”.
In his statement, the 78-year-old Lafontaine stressed that he wanted to have an alternative to the policy of social insecurity and inequality in the political spectrum and that is why he founded the Left, but notes that today the party has given up this claim. With this decision, the historic executive ends his political career, as he will not be a candidate in the Saarland elections on March 27.
Mr Lafontaine resigned as chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in 1999 after a dispute with then-Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, and in 2005 left the SPD and the Federal Treasury to form the Left, joining the Left Party. and Social Justice “(WASG) with the East German PDS.
