Germany’s natural gas consumption fell significantly by 15% in the first half of 2022, even if differences in weather conditions are taken into account, the energy industry association BDEW said on Tuesday.
Germans consumed around 15% less natural gas in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period last year, mainly due to much milder spring weather, BDEW said, according to preliminary data available to it.
Even after adjusting for temperature effects, natural gas consumption fell 8%, according to BDEW.
Very high energy prices, an uncertain climate regarding economic developments and individual initiatives for energy saving measures could also have contributed to the decline, BDEW pointed out.
Especially in June 2022 natural gas consumption fell by about 25% compared to the same month last year.
Electricity generation from natural gas has already declined from mid-2021, BDEW pointed out. In the first half of 2022, gas-fired power plants produced about 12 percent less electricity than in the same period last year, he added.
