Germany recorded 80,430 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, the highest number recorded in a single day since the start of the pandemic. The Ômicron variant is reaching a population with lower vaccination rates than some other parts of Europe.
The previous daily record, on November 26 last year, was over 76,000.
Germany’s total infection count now stands at 7,661,811. The number of deaths also increased by 384, reaching 114,735 since the start of the pandemic.
Just under 75% of the German population has taken at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, according to the Robert Koch Health Institute.
The seven-day incidence rate, an important criterion for deciding actions against the pandemic, has risen steadily since the beginning of the year, reaching 407.5 cases per 100,000 people on Wednesday, up from 387.9 the day before.
