Germany: Slight rise in unemployment – stronger teleworking

A slight increase in unemployment was recorded in February, a month in which employment usually increases, while at the same time the number of home workers increased significantly.

According to the Federal Employment Service, last month the number of unemployed increased by 4,000 since January and reached 2.904 million. Compared to February 2020, the unemployed increased by 509,000, but the overall unemployment rate remains at 6.3%.

Under normal circumstances unemployment in Germany February, compared to January, but this year many industries are experiencing the effects of the prolonged lockdown, says the head of the Federal Employment Service, Dettlef Zeele, curb unemployment figures. From February 1st to February 24th, more than 500,000 employees were registered in this program, mainly from the retail and catering companies.

At the same time 49% of those employed with dependent employment status now working from home, either in whole or in part, reveals a survey by the Bonn Institute for the Future of Labor (IZA) conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Labor. Compared to the first phase of the pandemic, last spring, teleworking has increased by 13%, while compared to the pre-pandemic era it has doubled, according to the same research.

IZA also points out that 56% of home workers complete at least 80% of their working hours there, while only 5% of employees complete less than 20% of their total working hours from home. Research also shows that the higher the level of education and income, the longer the hours of teleworking. The vast majority of employees (85%) have a computer, while 44% get a telephone from their employer. However, the researchers also found a significant difference between the sexes, with women receiving office equipment 50% less often than male employees.

At the same time, according to the same data, as the restraint measures continue, the discomfort of the workers at home increases. 42% of those who work from home say “too much” or “too much” psychologically burdened – the percentage for women reaches 48% while for men 36%.
