Giant balloons will be the new “supership” for fire prevention – How are they different from drones and satellites

As climate change shows its “teeth” with huge fires affecting more and more states, a new technology is being developed and specifically giant balloons to effectively prevent fires. The initiative belongs to Urban Sky, a start-up that designs high-altitude hot air balloons, and experimental tests were recently conducted in fire-fighting Colorado. Jared Leidich, co-founder and chief technology officer of Urban Sky, explained to CNN how the giant balloon will work and why he thinks it’s superior to satellites and drones. Based on what he said, the balloons will be equipped with various infrared sensors to map vegetation density and soil moisture content.
