GM unveils Ultra Cruise: autonomous driving in 95% of scenarios

Fans of General Motors cars have covered more than 16 million kilometers with their hands on their knees since 2017 thanks to the Super Cruise driver assistance system, Engadget reported with reference to the GM press center. But the manufacturer decided not to stop there, presenting a new generation system called Ultra Cruise – with it, the driver does not have to touch the steering wheel in 95% of driving scenarios in the United States and Canada. The company noted that the system supports both highways, highways and lanes outside the city, as well as city streets, roads in neighborhoods, parking lots and even rural roads.

In addition, the new driver assistance system has a really impressive range of possibilities. For example, the Ultra Cruise system will show the driver important information on a new dynamic display – there will be data on speed, lane, remaining fuel in the tank, current driving mode and more. Naturally, the novelty allows the car to move along a pre-laid route within the two countries – it is enough to enter the data into the navigation center. While driving, the vehicle will keep its distance from the nearest vehicles and observe the speed limit.

If necessary, the car will be able to change the lane itself, notifying the driver, or change it at the request of a person. While driving around the city, the vehicle will be able to independently turn left and right, while avoiding various objects within the range of sensors and lidars. And, of course, the vehicle is able to park in parking lots or in residential areas. However, the driver will still have to keep track of the road – the car will have a special monitoring system that will not allow a person to fall asleep or completely go into their own affairs.

The first cars with Ultra Cruise will be presented in 2023 – first, Cadillac will release its models with a new assistant, then it will be available to other representatives of General Motors.
