Google accused of monopoly in the market of voice assistants for Android

It looks like Google is facing yet another European regulatory investigation. This time due to the dominance of the voice assistants market for Android. Sam Wilkin, editor of MLex, a news site covering European regulators, tweeted that the tech giant could be in trouble. We are talking about the possible coercion of manufacturers of Android devices to use the “Google Assistant” as the default voice assistant.

Google Assistant has been the default feature on most Android devices since 2017. An artificial intelligence-based voice assistant was first introduced in 2016, it can schedule meetings, answer basic user questions and perform specific actions.

European Commission Vice President and European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager has made it clear that she is unhappy with the dominance of multiple voice assistants in Europe and that this could impede competition. She also raised concerns about how voice assistants collect user data.

“In the EU, the leading voice assistants are Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple Siri … There are questions about their pre-installation and concerns about default settings,” said the European Commissioner.

Previously, the European Union has already fined Google for anti-competitive behavior related to search, advertising and Android. The company received three large fines worth nearly $ 10 billion.
