Eruptions on Fuego Volcano, not far from the Guatemalan capital, stopped yesterday Friday after 32 hours of activity, without any casualties being reported, informed the National Institute of Volcanology (INSIVUMEH) of the Central American state.
“The parameters of seismic activity, acoustic surveillance and field observation indicate that in the last few hours the (explosive) activity has gradually decreased” and this translated into de-escalation of the activity, the “release” of explosive flows, the INSIVEE spokesman explained to the press. , Emilio Barillas.
At the mouth of the volcano, at an altitude of 3,763 meters, the release of volcanic eruptions “drastically decreased” and lava flows “are no longer active”.
“These developments have led to the declaration of an end to the explosive activity on the Fuego volcano,” which began on Thursday morning, without the need to order any community evacuations, the spokesman added.
The eruption caused lava to flow six kilometers to the foot of the volcano, which is 35 kilometers southwest of the capital, the official said.
It was the strongest eruption of the volcano recorded since June 3, 2018, when at least 215 people were killed, hundreds were injured and many others were officially declared missing.
Four villages near the volcano were hit by volcanic ash rain.
In addition to Fuego, Guatemala has two other active volcanoes, Pacquiao (south) and Santiago (west).
