HDD 30 TB in a couple of years. Seagate is working on second generation HAMR drives

Seagate is already actively working on second-generation HAMR technology for hard drives, even though first-generation HAMR drives have not gone mainstream over the years.

The company has a 20TB HDD with first generation HAMR, which has been offered to partners since December last year. And now Seagate is already developing a second-generation HAMR drive, which will have a capacity of about 30 TB.

When such HDDs will be available, the company does not specify. But earlier she said that in 2025 she wants to release a 50 TB drive, so the 30 TB version will be released much earlier. Possibly 2023.

Recall that HAMR (heat-assisted magnetic recording) is a magnetic recording technology using local heating of plates. The technology has been around for over 10 years, but for a number of reasons it has not yet become mainstream.
