He breaks confinement for 8 seconds: € 3,000 fine

This can be described as a draconian application of the regulation. The Taiwanese authorities have fined a man 100,000 Taiwan dollars, or about 3,000 euros, for breaking his placement in quarantine for eight seconds, CNN said. The man was spotted after observing surveillance cameras at the hotel where he was staying.

No doubt, he saw in it a harmless gesture, without consequences. Originally from the Philippines, the man was in Taiwan for work. But, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the island applies particularly strict quarantine conditions. He therefore had to stay in his hotel in Kaohsiung for two weeks, without leaving his room. But, the staff of the establishment, after observations of the surveillance cameras, made a report to the health authorities. Indeed, the images show that the man went into the corridor on November 19 for eight seconds. He wanted to give an item to a friend who was in the next room, also in quarantine. Enough for him to have to pay a particularly hefty fine.

Taiwan facing imported cases

Why such a strict attitude from the authorities? According to NHK World-Japan, the island of Taiwan imposes this 14-day quarantine on all arrivals, even its own citizens. Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the island has recorded 716 cases and 7 deaths, details Johns-Hopkins University. But, for eight months, no case of local origin has been identified. On the other hand, the number of imported cases is increasing. In the city of Kaohsiung alone, located in the south of Taiwan, there are 56 hotels dedicated to quarantine, with around 3,000 rooms.

As reported at the time by Le Parisien, a resident of Taipei, the capital of Taiwan was fined in March of one million Taiwan dollars (30,900 euros). Returning from a trip to Southeast Asia, he had broken his confinement to go to a nightclub.
