Health extends multi-vaccination and polio immunization campaign until the 30th

The national multi-vaccination and immunization campaign against polio was extended by the Ministry of Health until the 30th of September. According to the ministry, the extension of the term seeks to increase vaccine coverage and population adherence.

To date, about 39% of children aged 1 to under 5 years of age have been immunized against polio and approximately 4 million doses have been given since the start of mobilization.

The objective of the campaign, which initially would run until this Friday (9), is to achieve vaccination coverage equal to or greater than 95% for polio vaccine in this public, in addition to reducing the number of unvaccinated children and adolescents under 15 years of age.

For the campaign against polio, the target group is more than 14.3 million children under the age of five. According to the ministry, children under 1 year of age should be immunized according to the vaccination status for the primary schedule. Children aged 1 to 4 years should take one dose of the Oral Poliomyelitis Vaccine (OPV), provided they have already received the three doses of Inactivated Poliomyelitis Vaccine (VIP) in the basic regimen.

The National Immunization Program (PNI) and public health experts warn about the importance and benefit of vaccination to prevent the reintroduction of the poliomyelitis virus. The last case of the disease in the country was registered in 1989, in the state of Paraíba. Brazil received the disease elimination certificate in 1994.

Polio is a contagious disease caused by a virus that can infect children and adults. In severe cases, it can lead to paralysis in the legs.

multivaccination

For the multi-vaccination campaign, the vaccines available are: hepatitis A and B, penta (DTP/Hib/Hep B), 10 valent pneumococcal, VIP (Inactivated Poliomyelitis Vaccine), HRV (human rotavirus vaccine), meningococcal C (conjugate), OPV (oral polio vaccine), yellow fever, triple viral (measles, rubella, mumps), tetraviral (measles, rubella, mumps, chickenpox), DTP (triple bacterial), chickenpox and quadrivalent HPV (human papillomavirus).

The HPV, dT (double adult), yellow fever, triple viral, hepatitis B, dTpa and meningococcal ACWY (conjugated) vaccines will be available for adolescents. The Ministry of Health reinforces that all immunizers that are part of the National Immunization Program (PNI) are safe and are approved by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).

As the vaccination campaigns coincide with the ongoing immunization against Covid-19, the ministry recommends that coronavirus vaccines can be administered simultaneously or with any interval with the others on the national calendar, in the population from 3 years old. deity.

The increase in vaccination coverage aims to increase protection against vaccine-preventable diseases, preventing outbreaks and hospitalizations, sequelae, rehabilitation treatments and deaths.
