Need more memory: 48MP shots on new iPhones weigh too much

The new iPhone 14 without the Pro prefix in the name cannot boast an impressive list of innovations, but for “professional” smartphones, Apple has prepared a bright innovation – now the main image sensor in the rear camera system boasts a resolution of 48 megapixels. And while most Android smartphones have had cameras for a very long time, for the iPhone, which has been using 12MP sensors for a long time, this is a huge step in terms of image quality. But, as it turned out, this innovation is far from suitable for everyone, since full-resolution pictures on a smartphone will take up too much space.

Here it is worth immediately clarifying that although the main camera of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max really has a resolution of 48 megapixels, in standard mode it will shoot at a resolution of 12 megapixels – binning technology is used to combine four neighboring pixels into one. But if desired, the user can shoot in ProRAW mode in native resolution, that is, at 48 megapixels. And if you believe the information of journalist Steve Moser (Steve Moser) from the information publication MacRumors, such pictures will take up an average of 75 MB of internal smartphone memory. This is a lot even for SLR full-frame cameras, not to mention smartphones.

For comparison, the journalist points out that the pictures taken in ProRAW mode on the iPhone 13 Pro Max smartphone, which has a simpler 12 MP matrix, take up 25 MB of smartphone memory. Accordingly, the weight of images on the new Apple smartphone at the maximum resolution increases exactly three times. And although Apple has already abandoned the ridiculous 64 GB of internal memory in the basic versions of its smartphones, the current memory of 128 GB (the minimum amount of memory at the moment) will also clearly not be enough if the user decides to take pictures in full resolution, and even in RAW format. .

On the other hand, calling it a big problem is also difficult – in most situations, users will not use ProRAW. Not every potential buyer of this smartphone is a fan of mobile photography, so most often the standard shooting mode will be used with 12 megapixel frames, which weigh much less and, of course, save less scene data. Unfortunately, there is no information about the average weight of such shots, but, most likely, nothing will change in terms of photos for the average user.
