Heat-related fire in Iran has set off mines around a prison

A forest fire which was caused due to the heat reached up to prison Evin, to the north of Tehran at Irancausing mines placed in a security zone around the building to explode, Iran’s judicial authorities said.

Mizan agency reported that the fire was brought under control very quickly and no damage was caused to the prison facilities. “The fire spread to a protected area in the hills around Evin prison and caused the explosion of some mines”the agency added, without citing any casualties or specifying the type of mines.

In this prison, which is also surrounded by electric wire fences, political prisoners, foreigners and Iranians who have a second citizenship are held, among others, according to the Athens News Agency.

Dissidents are also held in these facilities who were arrested in the anti-government protests over the death of Mahsha Amini, a 22-year-old of Kurdish origin who was arrested last year by the morality police for not wearing her headscarf “correctly”.

Last October, a fire broke out in a wing of Evin prison, killing eight people.

Due to the unbearable heat prevailing in Iran at this time, the government declared holidays on Wednesday and Thursday. Many cities in southern Iran have been experiencing extreme temperatures in recent days. In Ahvaz the mercury exceeded 51 degrees Celsius, according to state media.
