Heat waves are likely to return in the coming months, meteorologist tells CNN

After the heat wave that covered the Southeast, Midwest and parts of the Northeast and North, a cold front advances through the Southeast, dropping temperatures in the region.

In an interview with CNN this Sunday (19), Climatempo meteorologist Guilherme Borges reinforced the importance of the arrival of this cold front, to “break the strong heat cycle” in the region, which was “suffocating”.

However, Borges highlights that the strong heat is still expected to return. “We should have other heat wave scenarios from now on,” the meteorologist told CNN .

“The heat we saw was a heat wave, which has the characteristic of leaving temperatures 5ºC above normal. We are heading towards more hours of sunlight, heading towards summer. We have a longer day and, consequently, it heats up more”, explains Borges.

With the arrival of the hottest period of the year, the meteorologist reinforces that new heat waves may occur throughout the period.

“We have the possibility of new heat waves, both for next month, for January, and for next summer. We have this scenario where new heat waves could occur”, said Borges.

In addition to a climate change scenario, the meteorologist highlighted the impact of the El Niño phenomenon.

The phenomenon has intensified extreme weather events in the country, such as the historic drought in the North and Northeast of the country, the rains in the South, the heat in the Center-West and this instability in the Southeast.

Borges reinforces that El Niño also has an impact on rising temperatures, leaving them slightly above average. The phenomenon is still expected to impact the climate in Brazil over the next few months.

“Its peak should now be in December, and projections suggest that it should last at least until April, and it should continue to affect it,” explained the meteorologist.

Drought in the Amazon

Borges explains that El Niño affects the northern region of Brazil with warmer air masses. With the addition of other factors, the meteorologist says that the drought is expected to last for the next few months.

“There is a very severe drought scenario, with the action of El Niño that impacts the region and a very hot North Atlantic that impacts the drought,” explained Borges.

Despite forecasts of rain showers in the region, the meteorologist points out that they are not enough to overcome the situation. “To end this severe drought, a very strong sequence of rains is necessary,” he concluded.
