Heavy rains cause transabling river and leave wide houses in PB

With the heavy rains that reach Paraíba the Sinimbu River overflowed in Bay of Traction, on the north coast of the state, directly reaching the riverside community of the Morrinho neighborhood at dawn on Thursday (6).

According to the city hall, the flood affects approximately 200 homes, among homes of local residents and vacationers – people who spend seasons on site. The municipality’s Civil Defense reported that about 80 families were impacted, with many having the houses invaded by the water.

According to the Civil Defense of the municipality, the overflow is the result not only of intense rains, but also of the siltation of the river and the irregular occupation of areas near the Sinimbu River bed, which makes it difficult to flow the water.

Support for the population

On social networks, the local city said it is offering emergency support to the affected population. Residents who need shelter can go to the Department of Education, while those who need drinking water, food or transportation can look for the Family Health Unit (USF) Cacique Daniel Santana, in the Morrinho neighborhood. The city support team also made themselves available to help with the removal of furniture and appliances from flooded houses.

In addition to the disorder caused by the floods, the population of Baía da Traction faces difficulties with the water supply. Since Thursday, the city has been without water supply due to problems in the treatment plant located near the affected neighborhood. Local authorities are working to normalize the situation.

Rainfall

According to the Executive Agency for Water Management (AESA), Bay of Betrayal recorded 177.7 millimeters of rain this Thursday, placing the municipality in the seventh position in the ranking of higher rainfall in the state. The municipality of Mamanguape leads the list with 228.6 millimeters.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued an orange alert of intense rainfall, of ‘danger’, to the whole of Paraíba. The warning, valid until this Friday (7), foresees rainfall of 30 to 60 mm/h or 50 to 100 mm/day, with winds from 60 to 100 km/h. The alert also includes risks of electricity cutting, falling tree branches, flooding and electrical discharges.
