Helicopter crash that killed 2 soldiers happened during landing exercise, says Navy

The Brazilian Navy reported that the helicopter accident that left two soldiers dead happened during a quick landing exercise for troops in an “adverse environment” called Fast Rope.

The Armed Forces stressed that neither missiles nor heavy weapons were involved in the activity. There were 14 people in the aircraft, a UH-15 Super Cougar model helicopter, belonging to the 2nd General Purpose Helicopter Squadron.

The aircraft crashed during military training in the municipality of Formosa (GO), about 80 km from Brasília.

The two soldiers who died are: Sergeant Luís Fernando Tavares Augusto, who served in the Marine Armored Battalion; and Sergeant Renan Guedes Moura, stationed at the Marine Corps Base on Ilha do Governador.

In a statement, the State Hospital of Formosa reported that six injured were discharged and released. A patient was transferred to another hospital unit.

According to a statement from the Navy, three other soldiers remain under medical care at the Navy’s Expeditionary Medical Unit and two at the Armed Forces Hospital.

Of the total number of injured, ten have minor injuries and two will undergo orthopedic surgery.
