High schools in Hungary will open three weeks after the scheduled opening

On May 10, three weeks later than originally scheduled, the Hungary high schools, as the Prime Minister of the country Victor Orban stated today on the state radio.

The Prime Minister also said, as AMPE reports, that he expects that 3.5 million Hungarians, out of the total population of ten million, will have been vaccinated with at least the first dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 by 19 April, which will then allow for further relaxation of the restrictive measures.

Hungary started the gradual opening of shops and services two days ago after vaccinating 25% of its population, although the Hungarian Medical Chamber described the opening as premature as the third wave of the pandemic was far from over.

However the country also had the highest daily per capita death due coronavirus in the world in recent weeks, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Hungary is the only EU country to give its citizens the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine, following the release of the Russian Sputnik V, although neither has been approved for emergency use by the European bloc.

The Russian and Chinese vaccines are given in parallel with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and the Moderna and AstraZeneca formulations, all of which have received the green light from the EU.

The Hungarian Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff had stated yesterday that the schools would open as scheduled on April 19th as there were no serious risks in terms of their reopening, dismissing the concerns of teachers and student organizations.
