Hong Kong Customs Confiscated 300 Mining Graphics Cards From Smugglers

The Hong Kong Customs Service carried out an operation in which 300 Nvidia mining video accelerators were confiscated, as well as many other miscellaneous goods.

On Friday, April 2, customs officials spotted “suspicious people” in the waters near Hong Kong International Airport who were “carrying cardboard boxes from a fishing boat to a speedboat.”

When they saw representatives of law enforcement agencies, they immediately jumped into the boat and tried to hide in the direction of China. During the arrest, contraband goods worth $ 3.8 million were confiscated from them.

The boxes contained 300 special Nvidia mining cards – recently launched CMP accelerators that lack video outputs and are designed specifically for mining cryptocurrencies.

History recalls that a severe shortage of mining equipment forces miners from China to look for any means of purchasing such devices, including with the help of smugglers.

In addition to mining video accelerators, Hong Kong customs officers confiscated expensive alcohol and cosmetics. The criminals face a fine of up to $ 250,000 and a prison sentence of up to 7 years.

At the end of March, it was reported that the mining company Hut 8 bought chips for mining cryptocurrencies from Nvidia for $ 30 million.
