Hospital cases and people admitted to intensive care for Covid-19 in Australia continued to fall on Tuesday as authorities urged people to take booster shots of the vaccine to prevent serious illness and death from the coronavirus.
Powered by the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, Australia’s total infections have now reached nearly 2.4 million, nearly 10% of the country’s population, with around 2.2 million in the last two months alone.
But the less-lethal impact of Omicron and the increasing pace of Australia’s booster program have fueled optimism that the country’s worst outbreak of the pandemic may have peaked.
Dominic Perrottet, leader of New South Wales, said he was seeing hope amid a steady decline in hospital cases.
Just over 2,000 people with Covid are in hospitals in the state, the most populous in Australia and the hardest hit during the Omicron wave. That’s the lowest count in three weeks.
“It’s good to see the decline in ICU hospitalizations and admissions and we expect this trend to continue,” State Health Chief Kerry Chant told a news conference.
Australia had great success in limiting Covid-19 early in the pandemic, helped by tough travel restrictions and social distancing. It began easing restrictions late last year after achieving higher vaccination rates despite the threat from the Ômicron variant.
