How the line of succession to the British throne looks after the death of Elizabeth II

THE british queen elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday. She was 96 years old.

The Queen became the sixth woman to ascend the British throne in February 1952, following the death of her father, King George VI. She was the longest-reigning monarch in British history, serving for over 70 years.

O prince charles the eldest son of the queen, immediately ascends the throne as king, placing his firstborn, the prince william Duke of Cambridge, as first in line to the throne.

Here’s who’s who in the House of Windsor and in the line of succession to the British throne:

1st in line for succession: Prince William

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, is first in line. He would assume the throne in the event of Charles’ abdication or death. He attained the highest educational degree—master of arts—among any member of the royal family. William served in the military from 2006 to 2013, participating in over 150 helicopter search and rescue operations. he has been married since 2011 to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, with whom he has three children: Prince George, 9; Princess Charlotte, 7; and Prince Louis, 4.

2nd in line of succession: Prince George

Prince George, 9, son of William with Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, is second in line to the succession. He must assume the throne after the reigns of his grandfather, King Charles III, and his father, Prince William.

3rd in line of succession: Princess Charlotte

The second child of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Charlotte turned 7 in May. Born in 2015, she enters the line of succession after British royals waived a rule that gave preference to male heirs over sisters in the line of succession.

4th in line of succession: Prince Louis

Little Louis joined the royal family in 2018. He turned four on the 23rd of April. Louis was born just weeks before the wedding of his aunt and uncle, Prince Harry and Meghan, in May 2018.

5th in line for succession: Prince Harry

William’s younger brother Prince Harry was also in the Armed Forces. In 2008, the UK Ministry of Defense reported that Harry secretly served in Afghanistan during a four-month mission in 2007. He is also a helicopter pilot and founder of the Invictus Games, a sporting competition for servicemen who have been injured in combat.

Although Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, are officially removed from the royal family’s duties, he remains in the royal family’s line of succession. Harry and Meghan got married in 2018. Together they had Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor in May 2019 and Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor in June 2021.

6th in line for succession: Archie Harrison

Archie was born in 2018 and is sixth in line to the throne. He, however, does not immediately qualify for the title of prince because his parents Harry and Meghan chose not to use any titles for their descendants. However, as Charles became King, Prince Harry’s son automatically became His Royal Highness Prince Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

7th in line for success: Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor

Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born in Santa Barbara, California in June 2021 following the decision of her parents Harry and Meghan to step away from royal life in the UK and move to the US.

Her unusual name is a tribute to her great-grandmother — Lilibet was the family nickname of Queen Elizabeth II. The baby’s middle name, Diana, “was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales,” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced in a statement. Seventh in line to the throne, the Queen’s 11th great-granddaughter is the longest-serving royal in the line of succession to have been born abroad.
