«First of all, the homemade dye is not applied well so it is always transparent, especially on white hair. The worst thing is that often unprofessional products are used which are therefore not stabilized, so they tend to turn black even if you use blond “, he explains Giuseppe DePiano, technical director of the team of the Friselli Hair Studio salon in Milan.

But the temptation of color managed in the first person is strong for many, even for celebs. From American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish to American actress Bella Thorne to British singer and composer Dua Lipa, there are many stars who love to experiment with DIY colors. Dua Lipa last April, in full lockdown, had her boyfriend dye her hair pink, then kicked off a rainbow of DIY colors well shown on IG: more than four home shades, starting from pink and then get to orange, red and bright fuchsia.

THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES OF DO-IT-YOURSELF DYE

«When the color is too dark, lightening that dark halo caused by the do-it-yourself becomes difficult even for a professional, so doing it at home is impossible. You will have to proceed with a light decappage at a professional salon. It must be done with delicate products and experience otherwise you risk getting colors that turn towards red-orange. Or, even worse, it could even burn your hair. ‘

NATURAL TRICKS FOR LIGHTENING: ARE THEY RECOMMENDED?
Nature offers us some tricks to lighten the hair, however experts advise against using them, on pain of an uncertain color and an uncontrollable chromatic metamorphosis.
«Beer, chamomile and lemon, if applied to the hair during exposure to the sun, tend to lighten but these are not recommended methods since the lightening is not controlled and therefore the result will be uncertain. Using chamomile shampoo will also give lightening effects but it will take several washes before obtaining a visible result », continues Giuseppe DePiano.
On the other hand, it does not recommend the use of vinegar and oil, two precious natural allies that help make the locks shiny.
«In ancient times vinegar was used after dye to fix the color itself. With oils, on the other hand, you can make excellent moisturizing packs which, however, have no effect on pigmentation ».

THE PRODUCTS TO REPAIR THE DAMAGES OF THE DO-IT-YOURSELF DYE
There are remedies for ruinous hair pigmentation slips, do not worry. However, sometimes they are not enough so it happens to have to give it a break, literally speaking …
«To repair the damage they are valid stem reconstructions based on keratin and hyaluronic acid, two of the most valid ingredients. But these are long processes and not always decisive because if the hair is very damaged the only remedy becomes scissors ».

COVER GROWTH WITH BREAK BETWEEN LIGHT ROOTS AND DARK LENGTHS
A long-standing problem for many is to cover the regrowth if there is a break between lighter roots (because they were originally white) and the rest of the darker lengths.
From the Friselli Hair Studio salon in Milan they explain to us that the only way is to make a color of the same tone as the lengths because the color has a covering but not lightening strength. Also in this case, relying on expert hands is the prerequisite for obtaining valid results. «To solve the strange colors made during the lockdown, there is only one way: you have to make a dark base color, in a color scale from 1 to 5 over 5 which corresponds to light brown. With crazy vibrant colors it is more difficult so it is always good to rely on expert hands ».

HOW MANY DAMAGED HAIR IN QUARANTINE?
Staying on the subject of quarantine, we asked the technical director of the Friselli Hair Studio salon team if they saw more damaged hair in the post-pandemic.
«At the reopening, after the lockdown, there was a period of intense work for us, especially due to the bizarre cuts our clients had and the dark colors to fix. Many have made colors too dark and the motifs are those we mentioned earlier: the product was left on for too long or the colors were not professional. The result? Several clients have arrived with black roots. So do-it-yourself should be avoided but, if you can’t do without it, the advice is to mask the regrowth with a lighter color than the one on your head rather than darker. And never keep the product ten minutes longer than necessary ».
