Humanoid robots walk, talk and flirt at CES 2025

THE humanoid robotics industry has grown a lot in recent years, and consumers looking for evidence of this need look no further than CES 2025 in Las Vegas.

Companies from all corners of the world came to demonstrate their technology and showcase their robotics skills to technology fair attendees.

As the sector grows, companies are finding their market, setting their respective goals for where their humanoid robots can perform best.

Co-founder David Yuan of California-based IntBot doesn’t see the Nylo robot in a factory or any large industry, but in a personal environment between humans and robots.

For this purpose, IntBot had to find ways to develop a personality for Nylo and allow him to express himself creatively and colloquially rather than rigidly and formally. In that spirit, the robot sometimes seems a little sarcastic, almost like a teenager.

“You’re clearly the prettiest… You’re welcome, friend. It’s always a pleasure to hear the truth,” Nylo told a visitor candy.

Yuan says they use AI multimodal language learning for Nylo and are trying to figure out all the different aspects of human-robot interaction.

“For example, body languages, facial expressions, eye contact, even micro expressions. These are some things that people don’t have an incentive to do, whether in academia or in industry, because we don’t have a kind of qualitative reference for these aspects,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pollen Robotics, based in Bordeaux, France, remains focused on engineering and producing its humanoid robots.

After creating Reachy 1 in 2020 and selling about 100 robots globally since then, Pollen launched Reachy 2 in October 2024, says Mirasha Samantaray, business development manager at Pollen.

They designed Reachy with researchers and other developers in mind. They turned it into a robotics platform that is easily adaptable for AI.

“With the data acquisition pipeline, you can use it to train AI modules. So it is ready for AI and not generative AI – as we know it today, with ChatGPT and all –. [Ele está pronto para] Embedded AI, which will be used in the future for all robotics. So it allows researchers to test their models in AI and also test their code in the traditional sense of training a robot,” says Samantaray.

Researchers and other humanoid robotics developers can customize Reachy with their own changes, such as adding hands with fingers instead of Pollen’s standard claws, or adding legs and making him bipedal instead of Pollen’s wheels.

The CES 2025this year’s edition of the Consumer Electronics Show, takes place from January 7th to 10th and is used to debut products ranging from new automotive technologies to quirky gadgets, as well as showing new ways to use artificial intelligence.
