Five people were killed and more than 10 were injured when a van collided with a train in southern Hungary early this morning, causing some of its carriages to derail, police said.
The accident took place at a crossing in the Mincent area, 140km southeast of Budapest, near the Hungarian-Serbian border, just before 08:00 Greek time, police added.
Five occupants of the truck were killed and several others were injured when both the occupants of the truck and the train were injured, a police spokeswoman told Reuters.
The truck had Hungarian license plates and was carrying local workers, she added.
The Hungarian news website delmagyar.hu wrote that seven people were killed in the crash, posting a photo showing a train car overturned, a helicopter carrying patients and ambulances to the crash site.
The state railway company said a train heading from Kiskunfelegikhaza to Hodmezovasarcheli collided with a truck, derailing a wagon carrying 22 passengers, two of whom were seriously injured and eight slightly injured.
According to the same announcement, the truck violated the red light.
