Hurricane Center says Beryl weakens to tropical depression

Beryl weakened from a storm to a tropical depression, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. The storm is expected to weaken further and become a post-tropical cyclone on Tuesday (9), according to the NHC.

The depression is located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from Tyler, a city in Texas, with maximum sustained winds of 34 miles (55 kilometers) per hour, according to a statement from the Center.

Deaths and damage

At least four people have died in Texas. Two of the victims were struck by trees knocked down by the force of the storm. Another person died in Louisiana after a tree hit his home.

Two and a half million homes are without power in the state, mostly in the Houston area, after Beryl made landfall as a category one hurricane.

This is the first storm of the Atlantic hurricane season to make landfall in the United States.

Beryl left at least nine dead and destruction as it passed through Mexico, Venezuela and the Caribbean islands.
