Hurricane season is just a week away, and forecasters are predicting another busy period.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said Tuesday that the season will be above average, bringing 14 to 21 named tropical storms.
Of these, between six and 10 are predicted to strengthen for hurricanes and three to six will be major, ie Category 3 or higher.
An average hurricane season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major.
The 2020 and 2021 seasons sold out the list of hurricane names and broke records. There is no certain prediction that the same thing will happen this year.
But in early April, Colorado State University released the numbers, which exactly matched NOAA’s predictions.
The university’s forecast called for 19 named storms and nine hurricanes, four of which would be major.
After consecutive years of using all hurricane names and resorting to the Greek alphabet, the World Meteorological Organization decided to stop using the Greek alphabet and made a subsequent list of names that would be used if all the already defined names were exhausted… again.
