Hyundai named crossovers to be assembled at former GM plant in St. Petersburg

Back in March 2015, information appeared that the American concern General Motors, during the restructuring of its business in Russia, was closing its plant in St. Petersburg, which was officially shut down on June 1 of the same year. Soon after that, another concern became interested in the plant – representatives of Hyundai expressed their desire to engage in localized production at the former GM facilities. And now, within the framework of a new special investment contract, the company has officially announced three crossover models at once, which will be produced at the updated plant – this was reported in the TASS news publication.

According to official information, the company localizes the assembly of Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Palisade and Kia Sportage cars in St. Petersburg – at the moment these vehicles are assembled at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad, but, apparently, the brand has plans to expand its production capacity. To launch the production of these models, the manufacturer will invest 36 billion rubles to modernize the plant and update the hardware, and the total investment from the companies has increased to 52.8 billion.

In addition, Hyundai does not intend to delay the modernization of the plant and the launch of production – the launch of a full-fledged assembly of cars at the former GM plant in St. Petersburg is scheduled for 2023 (more exact dates will probably be published next year). And this acquisition will undoubtedly allow Hyundai to consolidate its leadership in the market – the manufacturer already has one plant in the same location, which has been operating for more than ten years, assembling Creta and Solaris, plus many models are assembled at the Kaliningrad Avtotor.
