Hyundai nationalizes engine production after ten years in Brazil

Hyundai inaugurated last Tuesday (20) its first engine plant in Latin America, in Piracicaba (SP), ten years after having started producing cars in the Brazilian market. Until now, the equipment was imported from South Korea.

With an investment of R$ 500 million, the new unit, installed in the same area as the car factory, has a production capacity of 70,000 engines a year. The project generated 256 new jobs.

According to the company, the unit operates with technologies aligned with the concepts of industry 4.0 and with the same characteristics of the other 12 factories of the group in the world.

Ken Ramirez, president of Hyundai Motor for Brazil and Central and South America, says the group works with universities and technical schools in the region on internship and exchange programs.

“We share our facilities, parts and engines with these institutions to support the development of students and future professionals.”

“Our new engine plant has a high level of automation in its processes, providing the necessary flexibility to adapt production lines in an agile way”, said Ramirez, in a note.

The engines will equip the HB20, the best-selling car in the country in 2021 and leader this year, with 61,909 units until August. The Crete SUV is also made on site.

Joel Anjos, director of the engine and quality factory, informed that it is the first factory of the brand in the world to use an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) that optimizes the transport of parts.

“This feature reduces the space needed for parts on the production line by 50%, thanks to an integrated system that eliminates the need to accumulate items stored in the sectors,” he said.

In ten years of operation, 1.7 million units of the HB20 and Crete were manufactured at the Piracicaba plant. With three production shifts, the complex has the capacity to manufacture 210,000 vehicles annually.
