I. Smyrlis: The goal of increasing exports from 37% in 2019 to 48% by 2023 is not impossible

The importance of coordination in foreign, economic and trade policy, both bilaterally and internationally, applied for the first time in our country, highlighted the Secretary General of International Economic Relations and Extroversion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DOSE) and President of the Enterprise Greece, Ioannis Smyrlis at the Annual Digital Conference of the Panhellenic Exporters Association (PSE). The thematic unit in which Mr. Smyrlis participated was entitled “The contribution of economic diplomacy and chambers in the promotion of exports” while the conference was entitled “Exports: Power of Growth and Perspective for Greece”.

In his speech, the Secretary General stressed that the Greek economy has shown really remarkable resilience to the new data imposed by the pandemic on the world community, laying important foundations for the next day. Specifically, as he said, it used its Greek export companies very effectively, strengthening them with new tools and was placed more dynamically, also due to the important reform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the world investment map.

Especially for the Greek export companies, Mr. Smyrlis stressed that they managed to withstand extremely unfavorable conditions, as evidenced by the value of exports, which, without petroleum products, shows an increase of 3.2% for 2020, while in the period January – September 2021 their value had a further upward trend by 19.2%, with the result that the government’s goal to increase exports to 48% of GDP by 2023, from 37% in 2019 no longer seems impossible .

The Secretary General also referred to the National Strategic Plan for Extroversion, with the General Secretariat of the DOSE of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, undertaking the task to clearly state, in a specific time frame, the new goals, but also to integrate the challenges of economic diplomacy. In this context, he said, the “National Council for Extroversion”, which operates in support of Enterprise Greece, will be convened in the near future, with the aim of further increasing exports and attracting new investments.

In closing, Mr. Smyrlis underlined the importance of close cooperation between the government – Regions – Agencies – Chambers – Business, through targeted actions and tools of Economic Diplomacy, as well as the planning of a recommendation within 2022 “Extroversion Offices” in cooperation with local chambers which will act as our antennas in each region.
