Ideally, the PNI would decide on the 4th dose, says Fiocruz researcher

In an interview with CNNresearcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Margareth Portela, argued that decisions on the application of the 4th dose of the vaccine against Covid-19 should be taken by the National Immunization Program (PNI).

“Ideally, the PNI technical committee would be making these decisions [sobre quarta dose] and guiding a national positioning”, he said.

Margareth, who is also a member of the Fiocruz Covid-19 Observatory, believes that there has been a lack of national coordination since the beginning of the pandemic on the vaccine strategy.

“We ended up falling apart, with each governor and mayor establishing their rules, which is not the best scenario, since the PNI has an extremely competent technical committee”, he added.

For the researcher, the difference in vaccine coverage across the country is a cause for concern. “We have real pockets of very low vaccination, not for political reasons, but for logistical reasons, we have many challenges, there is no point in continuing to have gaps because the risk of variants will continue”.

She also highlights the importance of specific actions in locations that have a high number of cases.

“Some places have a high level of transmission, which is obviously worrying, I have seen ICU bed data and it worries the places with low vaccination coverage and precariousness of resources in the midst of the Ômicron explosion that is still happening, as in the Northeast”, he said.

At the same time, according to her, capitals such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro went through the peak and are on a downward curve in the number of contaminations.
