If the Core i7-12700H is not allowed to consume a lot of power, it will lose to the one-year-old Ryzen 9 5900HS

Intel Alder Lake processors turned out to be very productive, but already the first tests of the older model showed that not everything is good in terms of power consumption. It turned out that mobile CPUs also have the same questions.

Notebookcheck has received a brand new Alienware X14 based on the Core i7-12700H. Recall that this is a high-performance CPU with 14 cores (six large and eight small) and a TDP of 45 W with a maximum value of 115 W. Alder Lake has very wide ranges of power limits, so these CPUs will work differently in different laptops. The Alienware X14 is hard-limited to 45W. Does it matter to users?

Our colleagues decided to compare this laptop with the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro 14, based on the Ryzen 9 5900HS with a power limit of 42W.

As it turned out, in such a confrontation, not everything is so simple. Of course, in single-threaded mode, the new Intel is faster, but in multi-threaded mode, in the case of the benchmark and in a number of applications, it is faster than the AMD CPU. Moreover, the difference can be quite significant, but the Ryzen 9 5900HS has much fewer cores, and this processor is already a year old. Moreover, in single-threaded mode, the Core i7-12700H consumes 29W, while the AMD processor requires only 18W.

Thus, we can say that high-performance mobile Intel CPUs also have problems with power consumption and are highly dependent on power limits. Therefore, the choice of such a laptop should be approached more carefully.
